Protoneutron Star Winds

چکیده

Neutrino-driven winds are thought to accompany the Kelvin-Helmholtz cooling phase of nascent protoneutron stars in the first seconds after a core-collapse supernova. These outflows are a likely candidate as the astrophysical site for rapid neutron-capture nucleosynthesis (the rprocess). In this chapter we review the physics of protoneutron star winds and assess their potential as a site for the production of the heavy r-process nuclides. We show that spherical transonic protoneutron star winds do not produce robust r-process nucleosynthesis for ‘canonical’ neutron stars with gravitational masses of 1.4M⊙ and coordinate radii of 10 km. We further speculate on and review some aspects of neutrino-driven winds from protoneutron stars with strong magnetic fields.

The Physics of Protoneutron Star Winds: Implications for R-process Nucleosynthesis

We solve the general-relativistic steady-state eigenvalue problem of neutrino-driven protoneutron star winds, which immediately follow core-collapse supernova explosions. We provide velocity, density, temperature, and composition profiles and explore the systematics and structures generic to such a wind for a variety of protoneutron star characteristics. Furthermore, we derive the entropy, dyna...

Magnetic Protoneutron Star Winds and r-Process Nucleosynthesis

Because of their neutron-richness and association with supernovae, postexplosion protoneutron star winds are thought to be a likely astrophysical site for rapid neutron capture nucleosynthesis (the r-process). However, the most recent models of spherical neutrino-driven protoneutron star winds do not produce robust r-process nucleosynthesis for ‘canonical’ neutron stars with a gravitational mas...

Neutrino Processes in Supernovae and the Physics of Protoneutron Star Winds

In preparation for a set of hydrodynamical simulations of core-collapse supernovae and protoneutron star winds, we investigate the rates of production and thermalization of νμ and ντ neutrinos in dense nuclear matter. Included are contributions from electron scattering, electron-positron annihilation, nucleon-nucleon bremsstrahlung, and nucleon scattering. We find that nucleon scattering domina...

Supernova Neutrinos and a New Algorithm for Neutrino Transport

We have developed a new implicit, multi–group, time–dependent, spherical neutrino transport algorithm based on the Feautrier variables, the tangent–ray method, and accelerated Λ iteration. The code achieves high angular resolution, is conceptually equivalent to a Boltzmann solver (without redshifts), and solves the transport equation exactly at all optical depths. We summarize and review the ne...

Magnetar Spindown, Hyper-energetic Supernovae, & Gamma Ray Bursts

The Kelvin-Helmholtz cooling epoch, lasting tens of seconds after the birth of a neutron star in a successful core-collapse supernova, is accompanied by a neutrino-driven wind. For magnetar-strength (∼ 1015 G) large scale surface magnetic fields, this outflow is magnetically-dominated during the entire cooling epoch. Because the strong magnetic field forces the wind to co-rotate with the proton...
